TFA- Chapter 4
This chapter talks about Ikemefuna. He lives with Okonkwo and his family. Okonkwo's children learn to like Ikemefuna and they begin to look up to him. In addition, Ikemefuna starts to like Okonkwo and starts calling him father. During the week Okonkwo's wife, Ojiugo, leaves the home to get her hair braiding without cooking dinner. Okonkwo gets very upset and when she returns home he beats her. I do not that he should have beaten her. It is not allowed in America and i think it is very wrong to beat the one you're supposed to love. He commits this during their sacred week and it is forbidden to beat your wife during this week. Because he beat Ojiugo, he has to sacrifice a nanny goat. After the sacred week, everyone in the village begins to prepare their land for growing yams and other things. This chapter was interesting to me, because I wanted to know what Okonkwo had to do for beating his wife.

Ikemefuna is a really neat character. He sort of becomes the son Okonkwo wishes he always had. He's sort of an adopted son
Ojiugo sure puts up with a lot being a dutiful wife of Okonkwo. It really makes the reader see him as a monster sometimes. You also have to feel bad for the poor goat! I guess that is to keep the Gods happy?
Keep the comments coming.
Mr. Farrell
I totally agree about the whole beating thing, but I can hardly believe all he had to do was sacrifice something. It seems like this is something these people can get away with all the time. I was even wondering what would have happened if it wouldn't have been the Week of Peace? It seemed to me that the only reason he got in trouble was because it was that week. It is just so sad that the wives have to put up with this stuff.
Wow Sara, your really moving through this book lol. I do agree with both you and Lisa about the whole wife beating thing, that was completely uncalled for. If it was not the week of peace I also believe that their would not be any punishment at all to Okonkwo because I think that was just a part of their culture. I also do not think that his punishment was anywhere near harsh enough, having to give up a couple of materials when your practically rich aint that hard.
Remember the culture guys, beating was in no way out of the norm. in fact, there is a phrase in many societies that people learn best by being beaten. yeah we all think okonkwo is a major jerkwad, but he was only a little out of line in his culture. I dont agree that his punishment was as light as it seemed. remember, he lost a lot of status in having to sacrifice these things. and status is often more valuable than goods.
Yea I deffinitally agree with you when you talked about him beating his wife. That is not my kind of thing. I think it is immoral.
