Book of the Dead
Ok i did not like this story mainly because I think the father was very stupid on his part. I understand his is ashamed of what he has lied about, but he shouldn't have lied about it in the first place, especially to his daughter. I don't feel sorry for him, because I am sure he knows this would hurt his relationship with his daughter. He should have thought about that before he lied about the wrong thing. I just think it is pathetic that he thinks he can lie to his own child and get away with it. Sure he got away with it for a long time, but sooner or later his daughter would have found out. I think it is rediculous that he goes and and steals her statue. Obviously she looked up to him and people looked up to her artwork, then he just goes and takes it from her. I thought that was very wrong of him to do. It seems to me like I am looking down on the parents in these stories. They are just getting to be worse and worse. I don't even know what else to say about this story, because I know if it was my dad i would be ashamed.

I think he lied to his daughter because he didn't want to have to deal with her disappointment. I think for most daughters, dads seem kind of larger than life, and when they find out that their father has done something horrible.... I don't think any dad really wants to have to face that. I agree that it was wrong of him to take and destroy her statue. It's not like she was displaying it in his house or anything. Once it was sold, he would most likely never see it again. I think Annie suspected something else was going on or else she was in a state of shock. She didn't really seem to react at all after her father told her the truth. I admired her ability to go to the Fonteneau's house even when she didn't have the statue. I probably would have just called them. That must have taken a lot of courage.
I agree with you that he shouldn't have taken the sculpture. I know that it was not a good depiction of him, but it was the daughter's artwork to sell. I mean he could have asked her and not just taken it. She may have understood, but if he would have just told the truth in the first place, this situation could have been avoided.
I didn't get why the girl and her father still went to Gabrielle's house without the statue. The only reason they were invited for lunch is because of the statue that they don't have anymore. Like the other Sarah said, I probably would have just called too.
The reason he lied to her because she always looked up to her father, and if she knew he did the things he did she would not look up to him. He still should not have lied to her anyway. I agree that he should not have stolen the statue. She probably put a lot of time into it, and now it is sitting at the bottom of a pond. I know he thinks he does not deserve the statue but he still should have thought about the whole situation before he reacted.
