TFA Chapter 25

The next day the district commissioner went to Okonkwo's compound. He asked where he was and the men told him that he was not here but they could take him to Okonkwo. Whenever i read this i thought it might be a trap to kill the commissioner. Obierika took five or six men with him to Okonkwo. Obierka took him to a bush behind the compound. Then on a tree the commissioner and his men saw Okonkwo's body hanging there dead. Obierika asked the commissioner if he could take Okonkwo's body down, because his body is evil now and none of them want to be buried beside him. Only strangers can touch his body. Obierika was furous at the men because he accused them of driving Okonkwo to kill himself. I think part of this is true. I mean if he was really a strong man I don't think he would have done it but apparently he wasn't. I think he was just too caught up in everything that he couldn't handle it anymore. To be honest the end of this book really surprised me. I thought that they would end up fighting. Never in a million years did I think Okonkwo was going to kill himself. He seemed so steady even if he was rude and messed up. I had no idea that any of this was going to happen. I wonder what happened to him family? Or if the town built another church? ..

Like you, I never saw it coming. I hated that he took the coward's way out and hung himself. I expected him to go out in a blaze of glory.. but noooo. He kills himself. booooo. I didn't like the ending of the book, and I'm not sure Achebe stood by his character's M.O. here.

We also don't learn of the fate of the tribe, but history shows us Africa turns into colonies, and eveybody gets taken over anyway.

I need a final summary entry from you and you will be all set to go. You did a fantastic job with the chapters, comments and observations. :-)

I enjoyed reading your blog.

I agree the ending of this book came as such a surprise. I think maybe he did it just because he didn't want the white men to get the satisfaction. I would have liked to know how the other characters ended up. I wonder whatever happened to Nwoye. Maybe his life got better. I guess this is just one of those open-ended books where the reader just has to think about.

If you ask me, he did it because he couldnt face the end of the old ways. he took the wusses way out. Man the dude was a hero and he died like an idiot. so much for teaching his sons to be cool.
